I feel there's a problem with amnesia spell duration in the series.
While all other spells are temporary in duration, amnesia spells are
permanent. Gilderoy Lockhart's amnesia spells seem permanent on his
wizard victims. Lockheart himself has been so knocked out by his own
spell that two years later he's still learning to draw linked letters.
Since there's tools like the Pensive and the DoM's "Think Tank", it
should be easy to restore memories again to amnesia victims once
they're properly diagnosed. But alas, they are not. Voldemort has to
use torture to break one victim's amnesia spell, and that breaks her
mind in the process. It's probably a terrible amnesia spell that keeps
the Longbottoms vegetables, and its duration has been extraordinarily
long.
We know Neville is forever setting off rememberalls because he's
forgotten something as well.
