I agree with your points about death and cheapening death. I think 
two more things are important:

1) If James were alive, he wouldn't have stood idly by lo, these past 
5 years and allowed his only child to battle LV alone. He was the 
last line of defense. He wouldn't shirk that, now. 

2) James's shade emerged from LV's wand at the end of GoF, along with 
all the other ghosts. Beyond any pretty theories we hatch, that's 
pretty strong evidence that he's gone.
