My first read, which I still think is the case, is that James wasn't serious when
he said, "it's more like he exists."
It really reads to me that he thought this was a brash, cool thing to say and Lily
would somehow be impressed by it.
Now, this does not mitigate what he said. It's still vile that he thought it would
be funny, BUT, I'm not sure we can take any kind of "Snape must be punished
because he is a vampire/gay/Dark Arts fiend/whatever" from it.
