Ooh, nice one.  I think that Neville is scared stiff because of 
something Snape said in class.  Snape threatened to poison someone in 
the class, and to give Harry Veritaserum; who knows what he's 
threatened to do to Neville?  So Neville sees the wand coming out.

But your theory puts a whole new interpretation on this line.  Could 
it be something he saw before, and didn't understand?  Thoughts on 
this, anyone?
