Remember when the portrait in Dumbledore's office went to the Ministry
to find Mr. Weasley. He/it/she was able to raise help by yelling until
someone came. This occurred late at night, so it would seem likely
that there should have been people there. I vaguely remember one other
reference to night guards but can't find it, but there is a guard's
desk, a guards station, which would imply that it is normal for a
guard to be there.

The logical conclusion it that the Death Eaters cleared the path for
Harry. They needed him to reach the shelf and retrieve the prophecy globe.

Don't you go to movies? (<-somewhat sarcastic) There is a reason Evil
Overlords have minions and toadies. What good is it being the Lord
over people if you aren't going to lord over them. Evil Overlords
never go themselves, they like bossing people around, they like having
people yield to their power an do their bidding, so they typically
send out wave after wave of ignorant toadies, in hopes that they might
get the job done.

Voldemort doesn't need to go their, he doesn't need to lower himself
to such mundane task, afteral, what good are legions of Death Toadies
if you can't send them out to do your dirty work for you.

I suspect that Voldemort was home watching the whole event unfold on
'Potter Brain TV'; that is: watching it through Harry's eyes. When he
saw that the whole thing was going wrong and that once again his Death
Toadies couldn't handle the job and he was going to be foiled by Harry
Potter, he was furious. He went there, to end that miserable Potter
boy's life once and for all, and get him out of his scalely hair.

But as usually, typical Evil Overlord; over confident, underestimates
his opponent, underestimates the situation, doesn't consider the
Aurors arriving, never occurs to him that Dumbledore will come to
defend his champion.

Also, he needs, or thinks he needs the information the prophecy can
give him, but he doesn't want to take any risk, he especially doesn't
want to risk tipping his hand this early in the game. So... he sends
out the Death Toadies.

Let's say Snape contacted the house of Black, and determined that
Black was there. So at this point, Harry is at Hogwarts captured by
Umbridge, and Sirius is home safe.

Now he gets back and finds out that Harry is in the woods, but he is
still assumed a captive of Umbridges. 'Now what?' Snape asks himself.
Is Umbridge safe from Potter and Granger? Are Potter and Granger safe
from Umbridge? Are any of them safe in the woods? He must ponder....

He decides he has to go into the woods after them; walk, walk, walk,
search, search, search; no Umbridge, no Potter, no Granger. He gets
back to the castle and realizes that there is also no Ron, no Ginny,
no Luna, or no Neville. Conclusion? Those idiots went to rescue
Sirius. Now Snape starts organizing a rescue party to rescue the rescuers.

That sounds like a lot of time to me.

Just a thought.
