It is my theory (and I think that of many others) that Snape went Voldemort after the graveyard scene on DD's orders and tried (and must have succeeded, as he's not dead, or Voldemort decided it was worth keeping him around for a while for another reason - perhaps to feed incorrect information back to DD) to convince Voldemort that he (Snape) was still loyal to him and was only pretending to be on DD's side. Isn't that nice, oh Dark Lord, I have an in to the other side and can be helpful to you in this way.

As someone on the list said recently, Snape is a triple agent, so to speak. Both sides think he's on their side (thus the two), but he's really only on one side (I believe DD's, even though Snape is definitely a git).

I do think there are some loose ends, though, as I don't see how Snape can explain his actions from SS/PS unless he can somehow claim ignorance of Quirrell being possessed by Voldemort.
