The darkness of the Dementor attack on Harry and Dudley makes the
stars vanish from the sky. (paraphrase)

When Harry arrives at 12 Grimmauld Place, the group has to enter
quietly. "It was like entering a house where someone was dying."
Again, paraphrased, but you get the gist.

I won't repeat what Darrin said about the position that JKR had put
Sirius in - but, I agree, she'd pretty much written him into a corner
where there didn't seem to be any way out other than to kill him off.

Except to add:

There was no mention about the Order doing anything to try to find
Pettigrew to prove Sirius' innocence. They may very well have been
trying to do that, but, if so, we never heard about it. So, it
appeared to me that another door had been closed on the possibility
of making Sirius' role more active.

Also, JKR's descriptions of Sirius made him less and less like the
person we saw in GoF. The moodiness, the retreating from interacting
with others, the implied messiness of his appearance, all made me
believe that she was building this up to prepare us for Sirius to
explode into action or break out of the confines of the house and end
up getting himself killed.
