This whole thread discussion is interesting. My take on it is this. It
reminds me of the Star Wars folms. Everyone loved the first film. Then came along
the second, The Empire Strikes back. I can remember the reviews/discussions
about how the second film was such a "disappointment". Then came along Return of
the Jedi and everyone was happy again. It is my opinion that the reason for the
second Star Wars film and, in turn, OoP, provoking so much disappointment, is
because they are necessary to the story line, but have no clear resolution of
conflict. As humans, we have a difficult time with ambiguity, particularly
when it come to the conflict/resolution issue. It calls to mind my 8th grade
students moaning and groaning and arguing! about the ending of The Monkey's Paw.
OoP is IMO the best of the books so far simply because it doesn't leave us
with that feeling of closure.....
