A few of JKR's intentionally misspelled names have been hovering
around my head for a couple of days. By these I mean names that sound
just like a word that more or less describe the person or thing named,
but that are spelled differently. Four solid ones come to mind, but I
was wondering if there are others. The first four are:
(1) Kreacher (for "creature", which he is)
(2) Karkus the giant (for "carcass", which he becomes)
(3) Grimmauld Place (for "grim old place", which it is)
(4) Umbridge (for "umbrage", which she takes a lot of)
To these we can possibly add:
(5) Sirius (for "serious", though the canine connection is perhaps
more important, and he seems to enjoy mischief a bit more than someone
I would call serious)
and, with a slight inversion:
(6) Hagrid (for "haggard", which he seems to be, though that may be
movie contamination).
Any others? Had Fudge's last name been spelled a little differently
(Phudge?), I might have included that one as well. But it isn't, so I
didn't. There may be others that are close, of course, but I want to
play this pretty strictly using English words.
