The Sergeant Majorette says:

Possibility? You mean Sirius and Remus are *straight*? What about
Draco?

I don't think children will 'lose innocence' over the presence of
same-sex relationships as they are portrayed in the Potterverse any
more than they do in the real world when they realize exactly what
Daddy did to Mommy to produce them. That is, they are totally grossed
out at first; left to their own ruminations and given time to
reflect, they come to terms with the physical reality of sex.

We're talking about an adventure yarn here, not a bodice-ripper (or a
jockstrap ripper). There's no 'need to know' about anybody's
sexuality, which pretty much boils down to what they think about when
they masturbate (ick, right?) Myself, I thought the whole Cho Chang
thing was contrived and intrusive.

As to the fan fiction controversy (I love fanfic -- you can have your
canon characters any way you like them!), my understanding is not
that JKR moved to stop fanfiction, just to restrict access to PG17
and higher (lower?) rated material so that young readers following
links couldn't happen onto anything they couldn't handle.

Restricted sites are doing a booming business in material that ranges
from rated PG13 for implied homosexuality to hard-core gay porn that
would terrify Graham Norton. However, unlike some authors who will
not tolerate *any* fan fiction, JKR has expressed appreciation of the
fact that readers love her characters, relate to them, and have given
them lives in the world she has created far beyond the scope of the
stories she has written.
