Here's the "Alchemy guy" again. (Thanks for the compliment, Sydney).
In an earlier post I pointed out how cleverly the name of the Elizabethan alchemist John Dee is hidden in OOP (Dijon - Hagrid's pronouniation - Dee John).
Like Nicholas Flamel, John Dee is a historical figure (1527-1608). A quick search on internet will reveal just what a gifted alchemist he was. A remarkable thing to me is that one of his symbols was used in the "Alchemical Wedding of Christian Rosencreutz", which I discussed a few days ago.
The author Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932) wrote a novel, taking the life of John Dee as the basis. In "The Angel of the West Window" Meyrink, just like JK Rowling, outlines the Path of Liberation. In his incarnation as John Dee, he tries to make gold from baser metals, but in his next incarnation he understands that spiritual gold is meant, and so, just like Harry, he goes to a castle to learn to be a "gardener". To ordinary people the castle looks like a ruin, but to the reborn John Dee it is a castle with great walls and turrets. Sound familiar? I'll leave it there; people can search internet if they want to know more.
