He wasn't "sending" the dreams at first.  Voldemort was obsessed with 
the prophecy, and Harry started dreaming about the hallway because of 
their connection.  Voldemort was entirely unaware of their connection 
at this point in the storyline.

He didn't go AS a snake.  I don't think there is any proof yet that 
Voldemort is an animagus.  He had merely possessed Nagini, and was 
scouting out the place.  Nagini would not have been able to touch the 
prophecy merely because she was being possessed by Voldemort.
