Well, I thought it french for flight of death (or from, I've heard both)

Now here's where I am almost /positive/ you're wrong (nothing is 100%).

Aveda Kedavara, as far as I know, is taken from Arabic, meaning "I destroy" 
and it's where we get "Abra Kedabra" from
