Just double checked the scene on GoF. LV says (p651, US), "...One,
too cowardly to return...he will pay. One, who I believe has left
me forever...he will be kidded, of course..."

I always thought the first referred to Karkaroff, and the second to
Snape. (Whatever else he is, I can't see Snape as a coward.) Any
theories on where Karkaroff is?

 Me -

I always thought that too, until this discussion started up when I had a
change of heart. It doesn't matter if *we* believe Snape is a coward (or
even whether he actually is one or not) but just what Voldemort believes. If
he believes that Snape changed sides at the last moment to join Dumbledore
and save himself from Azkaban then he could equally well believe that he
will change back again and (after paying for his disloyalty) be a useful
tool for getting information on the Order, If Snape is still spying on the
DEs by pretending to be one of them I would very much like HArry and Ron
(particularly Ron) who always believe he's trying to kill Harry to realise
that he went back *knowing* Voldemort would probably severly punish him. I
would love to know how long it took the Hat to decide Severus was a
Slytherin because he's clearly (to my mind at least ) brave enough to be a
Gryffindor.
