I would need to reread PA/SS but I have the impression that the gap
between Gryffindor and Slytherin was in realty much closer that the
170 points that DD awarded at the last moment. I have the impression
that Snape had penalized them for much of those "restored" points
(McGonagall took 150 away herself). IOW: They had earned enough
points already and would have only been much further ahead after the
awarding of the points for saving the Stone.

Me -

Although I do disagree with the points being awarded (for reasons which I've
already
discussed. My real gripe with this scene is not the awarding of the points
pre se
so much as how and when it was done. It was done in a way which was as
humiliating as
possible (intentionally or not) for the Slytherins.

Bob Rosenberg -
Given they way we've seen them play (ie: Cheat), I'd say that their
Quidditch wins were more due to unsportsmanlike behavior than
outplaying their opponents. An unbeaten school team that I can
compare them with (for the same reasons) is the Field Hockey Team
from St. Trinian.

Me -

Well yes I agree that they're playing style is not exactly within the spirit
of the rules
(understatement much?) but then Quidditch does lend itself to that sort of
behaviour.
There are after all over 700 fouls listed in the rule book. There's a
referee there - it's up
to her to penalise the Slytherin team if she feels they're cheating. The
common philosophy
in sport today seems to be to do anything you think you can get away with.
