BUZZ!  That is the wrong answer.  We have been repeatedly told by 
JKR, the ultimate canon maker, that James was a Gryffindor, and he 
was Chaser on their Quidditch team.  JKR has said this in several 
interviews., one of which, was when she also said Lily was a 
Gryffindor (naturally).

We also could take a little leap and accept that Hagrid knows about 
Riddle being Voldemort and knows Lily and James fairly well, becasue 
Hagrid was in Gryffindor, too.  Plus, Hagrid is "tight" with 
Dumbledore.
