We also could take a little leap and accept that Hagrid knows about 
Riddle being Voldemort and knows Lily and James fairly well, becasue 
Hagrid was in Gryffindor, too.  Plus, Hagrid is "tight" with 
Dumbledore.

But Hagrid is quite a bit older than Lily and James....if he knows htem at all its' from working at Hogwarts not from being friends at school with them.  I do agree that Hagrid knows about Riddle or at least suspects...he did go to school with Riddle after all.  
 
My only thinking...is I still don't understand how people can turn on Sirius so quickly.  Without wondering if there was something wrong there.....I mean personally I would think if he did do it that it might have been that he was under some sort of mind control.  But then the climate of the time is different I suppose.
