I don't think it will be necessary for DD to die - in OOP we learn that it will come down to Harry and Voldemort (ok, also allowing for some wierd twist involving the "hand of the other" business). At the end of bk6, DD has become a side-player in respect to the final, ultimate win-lose between the two principals. He didn't/couldn't  kill VM at the MoM. The weight seems to have shifted squarely to Harry's shoulders, poor kid!
