This is certainly something I'm waiting to find out... I do think he
has some significance other than just being Neville's pet, and I've
said so in previous posts, although I don't have a theory as to what
those powers may be. Prior to OOP and even GOF I was thinking there
was going to be a lot more to Neville, and now we are starting to see
that, and I think there is more to his toad as well. And if nothing
else, they must be good for something since the other "allowed pets"
seem to be of some use.  Of course, Trevor may help Neville with
Herbology... it's always nice to have a toad in the garden since they
get rid of some unwanted pests..... hmmmmm.... I wonder if there is
anything to this... I said it half joking but there coule be something
to it.
