Sirius double mirror

Has anyone discussed yet the present Sirius gave to Harry over 
Christmas and it didn't appear till the end of OoP? Sirius told Harry 
to use it if he ever wanted to contact him, but Harry forgot about it 
and went to all the trouble to get to Umbridge's fire place, instead 
of using the double mirror. Maybe Sirius wouldn't have died at all. 
But, hey, it is JKR who chooses, so he would have died some way or 
another.
