Just going the throw in a couple cents worth on the subject in general.
First, Harry never said, 'I want Gryffindor', he said, 'not
Slytherin'. He would have taken any house, but he preferred not to be
a Slytherin.

That's why I was arguing that he *might* have sat under the hat praying to
be in Hufflepuff if he knew about Peter (well Sirius at the time) as well as
Voldemort.
Of course that's assuming MWPP were all Gryffs which I think they were.
I think the important thing about his choice was not that he chose to not be
Slytherin so much as the Hat offered him greatness (well said that he could
be great in Slytherin) and he turned it down. To Harry there are things -
love and friendship - that are more important then power. No matter how much
he has in common with the young Tom Riddle that is the important difference
between them. Riddle would have wanted greatness.
