Sirius told Harry to use it if he ever wanted to contact him, but Harry forgot about it and went to all the trouble to get to Umbridge's fire place, instead of using the double mirror. Maybe Sirius wouldn't have died at all. But, hey, it is JKR who chooses, so he would have died some way or another.

I was also wondering when this would be discussed or if it had been discussed previously. How tragic it was to read through that chapter. I wonder what will happen when Harry comes to the rationalization that his actions could have prevented alot of things that occurred the night at the Ministry of Magic. I wonder how that will play out in book six.

Oh, it's been talked about! I was pretty upset when it all sank in . . . he'd had the mirror all the time! And he only seems to think about using it to contact Sirius in the afterlife, but not about his failure to "remember" about the gift before the MoM incident. I agree his remorse will magnify when it sinks in. But looking back, I don't remember as I was racing toward the end of the book if I remembered it myself . . . I'm starting to think that I might have forgotten about it too . . . Harry had resigned NOT to use Sirius' gift. I was not the only one to also wonder about the significance of Harry's breaking the mirror in his trunk and leaving the pieces there. I think there will be something to come from it. The possibility of a reparo spell was discussed too, though some seem to think it would not restore the magic. Did Sirius in fact have the other mirror with him? I tend to think yes. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens!
