Spells at Ministry were intended for Defense

A lot of posts about what spells Harry and company used and why they
seem to be simple spells learned early on.

I felt the same way initially. But, tjen decided to reread scene for
PURPOSE of spells that Dumbledore's army were using. I had a
revelation-supported by the name of the training itself-DADA-we
are talking about DEFENSE.

So, really, Protego, Patronuses, Petrificus Totallus, Expelliarmus,
Stupefy, Silencio and good old fashioned dueling are being used.
True, the youngsters do not duel as well as the death eaters. So,
they have to rely on alot of ingenuity i.e.: reducing the shelves and
spilling prophecies, floating brains, poking wands in eyes, etc.

Keep in mind that the majority of the dangerous and damaging spells
would probably belong to the DARK ARTS. The true irony is
that DA (Dumbledore's Army) will never (we hope) stoop to DA (dark
arts). We see Harry attempt one unforgivable spell out of frustration
toward Bella following Sirius' death-but he miserably fails-because
he is not a Dark Arts practicioner (fortunately).

Even the Order members, including Dumbledore and several aurors do
not resort to the Dark Arts. Their spells are defensive and
restorative (Lupin's Finite) if needed. It is only the DEs we see
sending jets of green light or curses of purple, and applying
unforgivable curses. This is a critical distinction between the
tactics of both sides as war approaches.

As for Harry and his proteges, they learned several new spells since
3rd year (keep in mind Harry knew many from his one on one training
with Lupin and his preparation for Triwizard tournament).

Too, this year was a time for them to practice previously acquired
spells, honing them and improving their accuracy. We still see that
some (i.e. Neville) have an accuracy problem and do not always hit
what they are want. As we see, they still need further honing and
practical experience, which is why I for one think DADA is more
necessary now then before. The student body must be prepared for the
coming events.
