My apologies-you are right, I was wrong in thinking the reply said
more. However, I stand by James being a Gryffindor. JKR has a very
strong history of rebuttal, correcting misconceptions, teasing people
with other possibilities when they might be wrong. In the past she
has said things like: "good catch-I really cannot say without giving
too much away", or "you are pretty sure Harry lives, then"(I have
paraphrased these replies).

Well I happen to agree with you on that, I was just nitpicking. I do say
though that if James being in another House was to be a plot point at some
time she *might* have left her answer like that depending on how or why his
House would come up. If the plot point was besed on Harry assuming he was
and then finding out different then she might leave it like that.
However I do think that they were *all* Gryffindors. And certainly all in
the same House. I don't think they would have figured out the werewolf thing
if they hadn't been sharing a dormitory and while cross-house friendships
are theoretically possible (I can't think of any myself - dating and family
relationships yes, actual friendships no) they would have limited time to
spend together and as such the friendship would be likely to be less close.
Plus I think that for projects like the animagus thing and the Map they
would have needed to spend a lot of their free time together and it's not
really practical if you don't have a common room/dorm to do it in.
