I've wondered about this myself. I think Rowling may be playing on the old 
superstition that a picture could capture a person's soul (or part of it). 
My theory is that the picture or photo captures not only the person's image, 
but their personality as well. You also have to remember that it's magic, so 
it won't all make sense.
