In continuation of my disillusionment post, I think the etching was 
an internalization of the stigma - that is, if he complained, took 
umbrage, as it were, it would place the power back in DUmbridge's 
hands - by continuing, HP was able to become the agency of his 
marking, the only control he was able to have, in fact, in this 
situation. This of course also relates to the theories around the 
graveyard scene in GoF. But at any rate, that is what seems to me to 
be this issue. I quoted the relevant canon in my previous post. It 
was getting too long so I left out this bit.
