However, when Harry is reflecting about what just happened, there is this passage (OOP, p.650 av):

"What was making Harry feel so horrified and unhappy was not being shouted at or having jars thrown at him -(snip)"

So, Harry, at least, thought that Snape threw the jar.  He did have his back turned, as he was leaving and he could have been mistaken, but he thought it was thrown.
