Despite Nick's thinking that Sirius won't come back, maybe Myrtle's comments give hope that he might. "I was determined to . . ." Myrtle died suddenly. I can't imagine she consciously thought about coming back as a ghost, but she was determined to accomplish her purpose. Sirius certainly has a similarly strong determination to protect Harry, and though he probably didn't think about becoming a ghost at that moment, his determination would be at least as strong as Myrtle's (arguably much stronger). I had forgotten about Myrtle's specific quote in this context - good canon!
