I don't think it's far-fetched at all.  I'm certain that Snape recognized
both the room and Rookwood for exactly what they were, and he wanted to know
how Harry came to have firsthand knowledge of it.   He was likely thinking
that either Harry had done more unauthorized wandering and spying with his
invisibility cloak OR more likely that Harry and Voldemort's mental
connection was getting stronger than was in any way safe.  Both would have
been dangerous both to Harry and the Order, so Snape would have wanted an
immediate and truthful reply so as to handle the situation appropriately.
