>>> OK now thats out of the way, I agree that there is reason to
speculate that he may be unregistered animagii.
JK has let nothing slip on that matter so we can speculate our little
hearts out about it. ;-)
In case you have never come across it, in an online interview with JK
Rowling an observant reader asked her is Crookshanks a Kneazle.
Thats a lion like large cat with above average intelligence, that you
can find reference to in Fantastic Beasts and where to find them.
JK's response was something to the tune of "well spotted" so I guess
Crookshanks is indeed Kneazle.
I haven't read Fantastic Beasts myself [blush] so I am not sure how
that effects speculation that he may be animagii. I guess at least it
rules out his intelligence as a reason.

On other matters I am sure that theleakycauldron.org has
comprehensive lists of nearly everything HP and another place you
might find a list of spells is theHPlexicon I am sorry that these
references are a little obscure. You may need to plug in to a search
engine for the correct addresses. [blush again]<<<

Lady Macbeth:

Helping you out here a little. ~_^ Crookshanks is PART kneazle, and that IS
where his intelligence comes from.

http://www.hp-lexicon.org/bestiary_h-m.html#Kneazle Kneazle's aren't as
common as regular house cats, because wizards or witches who have them have
to take special measures to be sure they aren't spotted by Muggles and asked
about.

The general references you mentioned:
The Leaky Cauldron and The Lexicon are now also connected via The Floo
Network. The Floo Network and the Lexicon are both easily accessed here:
