Lady Macbeth:
This is why I disagree that a death should be for "emotional pause" reasons.
I cried about Sirius dying, but I doubt very much that I would cry or even
be as upset if Hagrid died. He gets himself into situations all the time.
He could have been killed trying to tame Gwap, let alone fighting Death
Eaters or doing work for the Order. He's a friend, but not an
almost-relative to Harry, certainly not an almost-relative who at one time
was his happiest thought when he thought he could live with him.
Me -
I admit to being upset when Sirius died because he's one of my favourites,
but also because he'd never really had a chance to live. I would also be
upset, but for totally different reasons, if Hagrid met his end. I agree he
often gets himself and others into trouble but it's not out of a sense of
reckless abandon. It's because he's terribly naive and even childlike. Even
despite the injuries he was getting from Grawp I think he genuinely believed
him to be no danger (and I guess he was sort of right there). Same with
Aragog - he didn't send the kids after him even though it was dangerous, it
never occured to him that there was any danger. So if Hagrid died (as I
think he well might) I would be sad because it would be like killing a child
He is a total innocent and wouldn't know what hit him. At l;east we can be
fairly certain that Sirius was cognizant of the dangers involved in going
after Harry and took the risk in the full knowledge of what could happen to
him. And btw that does not in my mind make him reckless. He didn't run off
on his own he was part of a well-planned (well as well planned as Albus
could probably manage on short notice) organized rescue mission. They were
all in danger but they did it to rescue the kids. This is actually one of
the few times Sirius has not been recckless - looks like he was finally
learning, pity it was a bit late.
