I think the reference to the budgie just was to drive home the point 
that it was a 'slow news day'. The media only drags out things like 
that where they have nothing else.

 
 Me -

Actually this might be a cultural thing but this sort of news item isn't
uncommon on local news progs over here. They frequently end with waterskiing
budgies or talking dogs or whatever.

And re the budgie/parakeet discussion, a budgie looks to all intents and
purposes like a different coloured canary. Not that I've ever had one - I
prefer my pets to have fur or scales.
