I, of course, *always* give Severus credit, and I'm about to give him some 
more:  Even Severus, for all his bitching, can't deny that Hermione is very good 
at ... well, almost everything *including* Potions.  He might not be that 
nice, but he knows talent when he sees it.

Besides, there's no way he could mark Hermione down even if he wanted to 
(which I don't believe!) because Dumbledore and everyone else knows Hermione's 
character.  Which means that everyone knows Hermione would be better than nearly 
everyone in the class.
