Now me (ereturtle18):
Quirrel's garlic had nothing to to with Snape. On page 71 of SS,
just after exiting the Leaky Cauldron, Hagrid tells Harry that
Quirrel was so jumpy because he had met vampires in the Black
Forest. We now know that this is just a front, but if you're afraid
of vampires, garlic is a necessity. Did Quirrel choose vampires as
his front because of Snape? His choice was probably a random part of
a series of imaginary adventures (Hagrid also mentioned problems
with hags when he told Harry about Quirrel's trip) that Quirrel just
took off the top of his head (unless Voldemort had hidden reasons
for the story, maybe he likes vampires). As for Snape being
described as "batlike", that's just a metaphor to enhance the
writing. Would you rather Snape be a raven?

ereturtle18:
Not necessarily. Snape has always loved DADA, so logically he
wanted to get high grades in the O.W.L. for it, which is what he was
writing. I've had my nose to the paper on more than one occasion
when I was concentrating hard, often without noticing until my face
got in the way of my pen. JKR always puts Snape in the dark to
portray him as a shady character.

ereturtle18: I'm going to blame that on Snape's parents. Looking at
Snapes earliest shown memory, he probably had lousy parents who
could have mistreated him, causing him to look that way, and
attacking his self-esteem to the point where he wouldn't care.

ereturtle18:
I'm sure Malfoy's made comments like James's before without
implying that someone's a vampire.

ereturtle:
My response to 4: Old is an overused adjective applied to
people one doesn't like and no longer has
any meaning when used in that sense.
My response to 5: James was torturing Snape. Naturally, he
would levitate him in the most humiliating
and least comfortable position, which is
upside-down.

ereturtle18:
Remember that Harry is also skinny. Were he muscular it
would be a different story, but anyone could cut off Harry's
circulation without too much difficulty, especially if they were
angry, as Snape always is just by being around Harry.
Sorry if I'm repeating or anything, I only joined the other day, and
I'm way behind. This is my first post, though shooting a million
holes in someone else's theory isn't exactly a dramatic entrance.
Thanks for bearing with me.
