Now, now. They could have smacked him with foliage or doused him with 
a liquid. . . They "hit him with it." "It" could have been something 
physical. 

There was every manner of magic being tossed about that night -- 
spells, hexes, actual brains, people getting cursed, poked in the eye 
with a wand. . . all that stuff.
