familiarity, as is clear from her reference in "Harry Potter and the
Prisoner of Azkaban" to the fictitious author "Cassandra Vablatsky"
and her equally fictitious book "Unfogging the Future". "Vablatsky"
is a metathesis of "Blavatsky," and "Cassandra" is an appropriate
substitute for Helena, because Cassandra was the daughter of Priam,
King of Troy, a prophetess who always spoke the truth but was never
believed and because Cassandra's story is part of the great war of
the Iliad, fought over Helen. Moreover, the fictitious book
title "Unfogging the Future" suggests "Isis Unveiled", Helena
Blavatsky's first major work."

to know Mme Blavatsky we should read her works. I for one can say
that when I read her works I am filled with awe, deep respect and
reverence.

Hans, I'm glad you pointed this out. I've been wondering
about "Cassandra Vablatsky" ever since PoA. I understood the
Cassandra reference in a divination textbook, of course. I also
noted that "Vablatsky" reminded me of "Blavatsky", but didn't realize
that it was one of JKR's little word games.

I am only vaguely familiar with Madame Blavatsky; didn't know her
first name or the titles of her works. I did know about her
connection with the Rosicrucians, whom I sort of stumbled onto by
accident. (In the course of researching the Freemasons, I followed
the history of the Templars into "Holy Blood, Holy Grail".)

I've been enthralled by your posts about the similarities between
the "Chymical Wedding" and the books of the HP series. All of this
makes me want to learn more about Theosophy.
