My interpretation of the protection was that Harry was safe while in
the place that he calls home, as long as a blood relative of Lily's
also lived in that place. I don't think the protection extends
outside the Dursleys' house. I think Dumbledore feels Harry is
equally safe at Hogwarts, where he is close to Dumbledore and learning
to protect himself. Otherwise it would seem wisest to have never
invited Harry to Hogwarts at all. Cruel though that may seem, it
would have kept him, and therefore the rest of the wizarding world
(assuming for the moment that the prophecy has been correctly
interpreted), safe.
I'm curious as to how much Voldemort knows about the backfiring of his
first attempt to AK Harry. I get the feeling he knows much more about
it than we do. After all, he's finally, after 15 years, managed to
regain a body. Why on earth would he continously tempt fate by
repeating his past actions? He doesn't seem the least bit worried
that AKing Harry might end in the same way it did 15 years ago. From
what we've seen, Voldemort learns from his mistakes with Harry. In
the graveyard, he decided to be dramatic, give a speech, and
demonstrate his invincibility by dueling Harry. Oops, mistake. So
when he's next faced with his young enemy, he knows better. He makes
a quick statement and then performs AK, catching Harry completely off
guard with his wand down. So what does Voldemort know that makes him
so sure he can kill Harry?
I know evil overlords are prone to overestimating their own abilities,
but still, I can't help but think Voldemort is right on this one. I
think he knows what went wrong the first time, and has somehow
overcome that problem. I don't think Harry is immune to AK anymore.
Just some random thoughts.
