Sof: Or maybe Voldemort didn't intend to kill James? The text doesn't 
say what happened in their confrontation. We only know what happened 
before and after. Perhaps he meant to hurt both of them by killing 
the baby (and leaving witnesses), but they wouldn't get out of the 
way.
