How is he [HARRY] not mature? The kid managed to live through ten
years of hell with the Dursleys and has seen his schoolmates and
friends die which all of been major character building experiences
for him.
Jo Seranadust replied:
Those experiences don't mean that Harry is more mature than any of
the other boys in his year. If that were true, then all children
who've been bullied and abused, would be ahead of their peers in the
maturity stakes, and that just isn't the case.
Random replied::
you've neatly skipped the deaths... who else in his year was
present at Cedric's death? and, to add another point, who else has
seen voldemort even once, let alone multiple times
Now Me:
I think Jo's point covered the deaths as well; It's not what happens
to you that makes you mature, it's how you deal with it. There's no
evidence that Harry has yet managed to deal with Cedric's death in a
constructive way - it was giving him nightmares at the beginning of
OOP and he still hasn't really talked about it to anyone. Nor did
seeing Voldemort in GoF inspire him to mature behaviour in OOP -
quite the opposite. Just having nasty things happen doesn't make you
a whole, mature human being. It can make you a horribly insecure
snivelling wreck. Just look at Snape!
