The myth tells us that as babies, Remus and Romulus were suckled by a
she-wolf. This added to his second name (which means Moon) is a clue
for first-time readers of PoA that he is a were-wolf, nothing more, I
imagine.
But after/alongside Dumbeldore(*) Remus is my favourite character, I
have great empathy for his world-weary ways and when I read the books
to my daughter I always use a gentle, tired and quiet voice for him.
However in books 6 and 7 I hope 1) he survives and 2) despite the
humanity he displayed in the Shrieking Shack that he will either kill
or bring to justice our slimy friend Peter, and so pay off his debts
to his dead friends James and Sirius.

(*) Ahem, plus a strong liking for Hermione but that is fuelled by a
most unseemly crush on Emma Watson but you won't hear me discuss that
outside the OT forum. Oops.
