I had the same thoughts/feelings when I read the book.  However, in 
thinking about your post and all the replies, it occurred to me that 
maybe they weren't supposed to kill anyone.  LV wasn't planning to 
show up and blow his cover.  Everyone was conveniently believing he 
is not back.  For the DEs to kill the kids would be to make their 
story believable, and would provide evidence of his return.  But 
with no evidence of LV or his DEs, perhaps the kids would be 
considered trespassing in the MoM and get in trouble for it?
