Lazy Queen Kara:

I think a more mundane explanation might be worth thinking about. Hermione has been going away to wizarding school for the last 4 years. She lives in a totally different world from her parents. Maybe she feels like they don't understand her anymore or is going through a bit of teenage rebellion and rejecting everything that she associates with them (ie the muggle world).

She probably doesn't even have any friends left (or may not have had any there to begin with) in her home town. I know that I would rather spend the summer with a couple of good friends than in my parent's house with nothing but my schoolbooks.

Another thought regarding Hermione and the House Elf Liberation Front: Does anyone else think that it is strange that some one so concerned about the welfare of the lowly house elf doesn't think twice about vanishing kittens or transiguring hedgehogs? I've always been a little dismayed at JKR's disregard for our animal friends.

 Hath smaller fleas that on him prey;
 And these have smaller yet to bite 'em,
 And so proceed ad infinitum:
 Thus every poet in his kind,
 Is bit by him that comes behind."
