Maybe they are Madam Maxine's birthstone?  I would think that alot of myths 
are near the same for us muggles and the WW (Hey!  Our myths had to come from 
somewhere, right?)  Or perhaps Madam Maxine is wearing them to show that she 
doesn't believe in the myth?  Maybe she's figuratively slapping superstition in 
the face.
