Unfulfilled Prophecies? (Re: The Harry Birthday conspiracy )

I don't mean to be rude but don't you people *read*?;-)

Just joking:)

Anyway - it isn't possible that Neville kills Voldemort. It was 
stated in the book that it's not that there already is "the One" who 
will kill Voldy and it's one of the two. It's not that one of them 
was "the One" from the beginning. It says that the boy which 
Voldemort chooses (and tries to kill) *becomes* "the One" (because so 
he'll mark him "as an equal" and thus fulfill the prophecy). 

My question is - if Voldy wouldn't have gone there, on that Halloween 
night when he killed Harry's parents, the prophecy wouldn't be 
fulfilled? There would not be "the One"? Well, maybe I'm just raving 
or something, but still... Can prophecies be unfulfilled? If someone 
knows them and knows what to do to stop them from coming true? Or 
will they come true anyway, one way or another?
