Hello all, Fred Waldrop here;
In OotP, page 842, US hardcover:
"Then - it might not be me?" said Harry.
"I am afaid," said Dumbledore slowly, looking as though every word
cost him a great effort, "that there is no doubt it IS you."
"But you said - Neville was born at the end od July too - and his
mum and dad - "
"You are forgetting the next part of the prophecy, the final
identifying figure of the boy who could vanquish Voldemort....
Voldemrt himself would 'mark him as his equal.' And so he did, Harry.
He chose you, not Nevelle. He gave you the scar that has proved both
blessing and curse."
Exactly, what part of this passage that anyone can't understand?
What part of this makes anyone AT ALL doubt Harry is "The One"?
The only way JKR could make it any clearer is, she would have to
slap everone on the back of the head, and scream the words to each
and everyone that has read the books.

There are two reasons, IMO, why Neville still can be the "One". The
first is, that it isn't said, when Voldemort will mark the child. In
theory, Voldemort still can mark Neville.
Also, only about five pages later than Dumbledore's speech, Madame
Pomfrey explains, that thoughts can leave the deepest scarring. This
can very well be a hint, that Neville turns out to be the one,
because he is marked psychologically.
I must admit, I would be more convinced that Harry is "the one", if
the second part of the prophecy didn't exist. If there were the
obvious choice between Harry and Neville I would guess that Harry is
the "Prophecy boy", and that Neville was just mentioned as a red
herring. But now Neville was mentioned and then ruled out only
moments later. That makes me a bit suspicious. Why mention him at
all, if it isn't somehow important?

"Me again, Fred Waldrop"
Hickengruendler, my problem with "only about five pages later than
Dumbledore's speech, Madame Pomfrey explains, that thoughts can leave
the deepest scarring" is, Voldemort was NOT the one that marked
Neville, it was 4 DE's.
And as for Neville still being marked later by Voldemort, then the
prediction will be wrong. In the prediction, it was said Voldemort
would "mark him", not "one of them soon, then unmark him, then mark
another 16 or so years later".
He, Harry, has already been marked, and unless Voldemort removes that
mark on Harry's head, and then yell "redo, redo" it just does not
work. Plus, what part of the prediction says Voldemort can change his
mind?
And finally, how many times does Harry have to prove he is the equal
one that was prdicted to go against Voldemort? (he has already
fought him 5 times, and won!! Has any one else fought him that many
times and lived, much less won?)
