Harry asked the same basic question at the end of the book and 
Dumbledore answered - that there was no longer any choice because of 
what Voldemort did. His going after Harry and trying to curse him 
ended up marking Harry - which was also part of the prophecy "And the 
Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark 
Lord knows not . . " Personally I think that Voldemort was going to 
get rid of both boys who fulfilled the part of the prophecy he heard 
about and started with Harry first because Wormtail gave him the info 
on where to find him. If Harry had died - I think he would have moved 
on to Neville. But instead he was vanquished and marked Harry - which 
made Harry fulfill the prophecy!
