Perhaps his treatment of Harry is also because he truly expects more
from him. A good teacher pushes the best students harder, to help
them rise to their potential. Perhaps Snape is using a bit of
reverse psychology. He knows everyon must think he hates Harry, so
why not use that to his advantage - get Harry to work hard to prove
him wrong.

Excuse me but did you ever have a teacher like Snape? Even JKR has
described him in the worst of terms!! Is that your definition of
someone being "a good teacher?" He is one messed-up dude taking a
bunch of his garbage out on someone who's played no role in creating
any of his problems. Not that Harry is innocent of being
disrespectful at times and invasive of Snape's privacy, but Snape
came out gunning for Harry from their first meeting. Please don't try
to peddle that as being a demaninding teacher trying to get Harry to
rise to his potential!!And I am sorry but I don't believe for one
minute he is just acting to fool Slyths. He hates Harry and they are
on the same side, just as he hated Sirius and hates Remus.
