Megalynn:
We aren't talking about public schools, we are talking about
boarding schools. I have honestly never heard of a free boarding
school anywhere, because private schools cost a lot of money
and are not funded by taxes. My original post covers why
Hogwarts is not governmentally funded so I won't go back into
that.

I think the problem with this discussion, and a few others like it I've seen, is that you're thinking about like a Muggle and not like a Wizard. (Or a Witch, of course.) Obviously things aren't done the same way in the Wizarding World as they are done in the Muggle world. We don't know if they even have taxes. They may have magical means for running Hogwarts. A lot of the food can be grown, while more of it could be hunted using magical help. They don't have any electricity bills or heating bills since they use candles and fireplaces. They have a large forest in their backyard to supply firewood as well as magically-equipped staff to help plant fast-growing trees. They don't pay the house-elves who manage the upkeep. All the students supply their own books, quills, parchment, basic potion ingredients, and cauldrons. So that leaves, what? Advanced potions in Snape's class and teachers' salaries. If it's anything like the Muggle world, they don't get much for pay. And I'd assume the free boarding is a big draw. Sure, a Muggle private school is extremely expensive to run but I don't see how Hogwarts could cost that much to keep open. With all the magic at their wandtips, it's a relatively simple operation.
