If Snape had loved Lily, I'm surprised that he wouldn't have made 
some comment by now about her marrying James.  Something like, "Your 
father was a bum and didn't deserve her."  He doesn't seem the least 
bit reluctant to say insulting things about James to Harry, but I'm 
not aware that he's ever said a single thing about Lily.  Maybe 
that's in tribute to her being the only one who ever stuck up for 
him.  He doesn't have to have loved her, but he might consider that 
she's won exemption from his general dislike and contempt because of 
her good deed  - and it might have been the only one.  She certainly 
got no thanks for it, and might not have bothered to stick up for 
him again, as she said.  Though somehow I doubt it.  It sounds like 
James had to conceal his vendetta with Snape from Lily; he knew she 
wouldn't have liked it, despite Snape's rude treatment of her.
