Jennifer T. replied:

Actually, while I don't think we have an actual date of death, Sirius speaks in OOP about his brother while showing Harry the "Family Tapestry".  He mentions that his brother became a DE, but later tried to get out of it, which Voldemort didn't allow.  Sirius tells Harry that Voldemort killed him, or rather, had him killed, as his brother wasn't important enough for Voldemort to handle the murder personally.
